RELEVANT INTERSHIPS

  • Internship: Plan Management Bureau, Municipality of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Period: Oct 2019- May 2020. Study: Master in Urban and Regional Planning
  • Explanation: For my graduation thesis, I researched the Amstel III transformation area in Amsterdam South-East, an area that is currently being transformed from a monofunctional office area into a lively, mixed city district where living, working and recreation come together. My research focused on 'local governments' approach to housing affordability interventions for specific social groups'. I have investigated how innovative policy and targeted implementation of project plans can contribute to accessible housing for specific groups such as starters, middle-income earners and families within the Amsterdam housing market. The choice of Amstel III as a case study was prompted by the complex challenges that Amsterdam, like other world cities such as London, New York, Hong Kong and others, is facing in terms of urban development and housing shortage. With knowledge and skills from my previous education and work experience, I have emphasized the social and economic importance of affordable housing in Amsterdam. I have proposed innovative strategies (following the example of other world cities) such as Develop-Apart-Together in PPP formation in which the municipality and market parties work together without a fixed final image but with spatial and programmatic rules for creative and inclusive area development, place-making and project realization. My research yielded concrete recommendations for effective policymaking, such as stimulating mixed rental segments (40-40-20 principle) and using temporary programming to increase the quality of life during the transformation.
  • Internship: N.V Airport Management, Paramaribo, Suriname. Period: Oct 2014- Jun 2015. Study: Bachelor in Business Administration Management, Economics and Law
  • Explanation: The research for my graduation thesis was about the optimization of the Commercial Activity Center (CAC), the commercial business unit of N.V. Luchthavenbeheer at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport in Suriname. The research focused on how the CAC can be exploited in a targeted way by applying marketing principles, with the aim of increasing annual turnover. I specifically looked at the integration of a structured marketing process within the existing business processes of the CAC, which is responsible for commercial activities such as shops, catering and other services in the arrivals hall of the airport. The research was driven by the need to better exploit the commercial potential of the airport, given the strategic position of Johan Adolf Pengel Airport as a gateway to Suriname and the growing international travel movements. By means of an analysis of customer flows, competition and market trend, I developed an implementation plan that served as a guideline for the redesign of processes within business operations. By drawing inspiration from recent airport projects worldwide, such as the expansion of Hamad International Airport in Qatar and the renovation of Afonso Pena International Airport in Brazil, I have sharpened my recommendations. These airports demonstrate how investments in commercial facilities and customer-centric innovations can improve revenue and passenger experience. The recommendations included strategies such as targeted segmentation of travelers (e.g., tourists, business travelers, and local returnees), improved customer experience through personalized offers, and optimization of the arrivals hall store layout based on consumer behavior. The proposed strategies provide a solid foundation for future growth of the CAC. By implementing an integrated marketing process, the CAC is enabled to sustainably increase revenue, for example by increasing commercial revenue by 15-20% within the next three years, depending on execution. The plan emphasizes data-driven decision-making, such as using traveler data for targeted promotions and partnering with local business owners to offer unique, culturally relevant products. In addition, the plan promotes the introduction of digital innovations, such as a loyalty program for frequent travelers and an online platform for pre-order services, which will further strengthen customer loyalty and operational efficiency. This approach positions the CAC as a competitive player in the region, with a future-proof model that responds flexibly to changing market and traveler needs.
