I'm a second-year Sociology student at VU University, curious about how societal mechanisms sustain or challenge inequalities. Globalization is an interesting topic because it has made certain sectors more connected. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the dependency of Dutch retailers on Chinese supply chains and has sparked further interest in the relationship between the Netherlands and Asia. The reason for this interest is my background as a sociologist; for sociologists, it is vital to stay informed of such rapid developments and become aware of the actual and possible impact. Because China will continue to be important for our economy, I want to gain more insights into Asia and orient myself for a career in which global partners and stakeholders are the future clients of sociologists.
In teams, we conducted quantitative research using available survey data from 2020-2021. We examined if the quality of social contacts mediates the relationship between volunteering work and mental health. After we ran our tests, we translated our statistical outcomes into practical policy advice in a presentation and a written report for representatives of the Municipality of Amsterdam and volunteering organizations.
In this project, we closely collaborated with a cultural institution. Using a qualitative approach, we gathered information on the provision of art and culture in Amsterdam. After transcribing interviews with residents, we arrived at special recommendations for varying age groups. The institution we worked for was very positive about our policy advise because it assisted them in improving their strategies.
