Project Intern
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency
Kampala
09.2018 - 01.2019
"In late 2018, I had the privilege of completing a three-month internship at the UNHCR head office in Kampala, Uganda, where I worked within the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program. During this invaluable experience, I actively participated in several key initiatives that aimed to improve the living conditions and access to essential services for refugees in Uganda.
One of my primary responsibilities during this internship was to support data collection and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping within refugee camps. This task involved working closely with the WASH team to compile comprehensive information about the location and status of boreholes within each refugee camp. The objective was to create detailed GIS maps that illustrated the precise locations of these boreholes and the associated data for each site. This effort was instrumental in enhancing the planning and management of water resources within the camps, ensuring that refugees had access to clean and safe water.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in meetings that focused on further collaboration and data-sharing initiatives. These meetings were pivotal in facilitating cooperation between UNHCR and external entities, including private companies and non-governmental organizations. The aim was to make the collected data accessible to a broader audience, allowing for better synergy and coordination in addressing the needs of refugees.
