I am a hard working, solution-oriented student with a rigorous educational background, and I have extensive cultural knowledge from having lived and gone to school in Amsterdam, The Netherlands since the age of five through the age of 16. I enjoy being challenged, and I am interested in STEM.
I train at Olympic level for rowing competitions, which requires training 6+ times a week for technique and strength. I have gone to nationals in the Netherlands, as well as many interstate competitions in the U.S.
I compete in World Schools style debate with two other team members. This requires public speaking ability, critical thinking, and teamwork. In Texas, I attended state championships. Amsterdam, The Netherlands For more than two years, I was a member of my Dutch high school debate team. We practiced twice a week and regularly attended competitions. In January 2023, our school took part in a Benelux debate competition, in which my team placed fourth, and I placed fifteenth out of 110 speakers.
I was selected for the national round, and later international round, of European Youth Parliament (EYP), based on my performance in the regional and national rounds. At EYP, students work together with their committee to solve an issue in Europe by finding and discussing the key problems and solutions relating to it and creating a proposal for future European laws around that issue. Each committee shares their proposal, which leads to a debate about the proposal, followed by voting. At the national round, I worked on the issue of lobbyism in the European Union, which leads to issues such as workers’ rights and tax evasion, affecting platform workers and high-tax countries. After the national conference, I was selected to participate in a conference in Germany, because I worked together well with others and was active during debates.
I worked on a co-curricular project called ‘Climate reporters’ with two other students to research how meat in school cafeterias affects the climate and how these cafeterias could introduce vegetarian options for students. To do this, we interviewed the catering services and school management of eight high schools in The Netherlands in order to calculate the CO2 emissions of the meat served. We wanted to understand how the schools would be impacted by making the cafeterias vegetarian and how the schools could change the food they serve. After these interviews, we presented our findings to the Dutch Climate Ministry and recommended the country lessen meat consumption in schools.
